Sato

“The Purist” · Static Rook only

The rook stays home. Classic is classic.

Sato, “The Purist”, plays Static Rook and nothing else. His rook stays on its home file through the opening, so his attacks come straight down that file, the classic way.

How Sato plays

Sato's AI marks down a rook that leaves its home file in the opening, especially one that crosses to the other half of the board, and avoids swinging it for roughly the first 30 moves each. Otherwise his play is balanced.

His default level is 5, adjustable 1–10.

How to beat Sato

Because his rook stays home, you know where his attack will come. Ranging Rook is a natural answer: swing your rook, castle in a Mino and counterattack where his attack lands. If you keep your rook home too, mind the move order: an unguarded bishop on its starting square can be lost in one move.

What he teaches you

Steady practice for the classic matchups: rook-versus-rook games such as Yagura and the Double Wing Attack, or the Ranging Rook plan of waiting and countering.

Tips

  • Expect his attack on his rook's file and keep defenders covering it.
  • In rook-versus-rook games, never move the silver off 7i while your bishop's diagonal is open.
  • As Black, answer an early White pawn on 8e with gold to 7h.
