Pawn exchange

In shogi, a pawn exchange (fu-kokan) is pushing a pawn into the enemy pawn on the same file and trading them, most often on the rook's file. The rook gains an open file, and you gain a pawn in hand.

Trading pawns on a file to open it for the rook and gain a pawn in hand.

How the rook-pawn exchange works

In Static Rook openings Black pushes the rook pawn from 2g to 2f, 2e and finally 2d. If White's pawn on 2c captures it, Black's rook recaptures on 2d, and each side now holds a pawn in hand. The difference is the rook: Black's stands on an open file, while White usually has to drop a pawn back on 2c to block it, spending the pawn it just won. White runs the same plan on the 8th file.

What to watch for

After the rook recaptures, do not grab a pawn dropped on 2c if a gold on 3b protects it, or the gold takes your rook. Retreating the rook to 2f is the standard follow-up. On defense, prepare before the opponent's exchange arrives: gold to 7h guards the area around Black's bishop in Static Rook games, and bishop to 7g covers 8f in Ranging Rook games.

Why a pawn in hand matters

One pawn in hand makes many tactics possible: tapping pawns, dangling pawns, blocking a check or attacking a pinned piece. Keeping at least one in reserve is a good habit all game.

Rook-pawn exchange: push your rook's pawn until it meets the enemy pawn. After the trade your rook stands on an open file and you have a pawn in hand. Most Static Rook games start this way. From the lesson “Pawn Techniques: Dangling and Joining Pawns”.

FAQ

What if the opponent does not take the pawn on 2d?

Then the pawn captures on 2c next move and may promote to a tokin, so ignoring the push rarely helps the defender.
