Pawn Techniques: Dangling and Joining Pawns

Pawns are your cheapest pieces, which makes them the best tools for opening files, preparing promotions and setting traps.

  • Start the rook-pawn exchange to open a file for your rook.
  • Drop a dangling pawn so that a legal pawn push mates next move.
  • Trap a boxed-in rook with a single pawn drop.

Pawns are the cheapest pieces, which makes them perfect for tricks: you can throw one away to open a line, lure a piece, or prepare a promotion. Always try to keep a pawn in hand.

Rook-pawn exchange: push your rook's pawn until it meets the enemy pawn. After the trade your rook stands on an open file and you have a pawn in hand. Most Static Rook games start this way.

Practice 1 of 1

A pawn drop on 1b would be illegal pawn-drop mate. Drop a pawn so that a pawn push mates next move.

Remember: Pawns are for tricks. Trade the rook pawn to open your rook, drop a dangling pawn to promote next move, and use joining pawns to pull the enemy pawn forward.

Blink and it's over.
