Castles · Boat castle vs Mino

Mino and Boat Castles opening

The standard opposite-side battle: Black plays Static Rook with a quick Boat castle (king 7h), White plays Fourth-file Rook with a Mino (king 8b). Both sides castle away from their own rooks.

This is the classic battle of castles on opposite wings. Black plays Static Rook and castles quickly in a Boat castle with the king on 7h; White plays a Fourth-file Rook and builds a Mino with the king on 8b. Each king sits on the side away from its own rook. Both castles take few moves, which makes this a good matchup for beginners learning to castle.

Key ideas

  • Boat castle: king 7h, golds 6i and 5h. Quick, so you can attack early.
  • White's Mino: king 8b, silver 7b, golds 6a and 5b. Its weak points are the head (8c) and the edge.
  • The Boat castle is thin on the diagonal; watch White's bishop on 3c.

Typical mistakes

Two positions where natural-looking moves go wrong. Play the move you would choose on the board.

Typical mistake 1 of 2

Black to move. Many players reach for Bx4d here — find the better move.

Why Bx4d is a mistake

The pawn on 4d is protected by the rook on 4b and the bishop on 3c. The bishop capture loses your bishop for a pawn.

Better: P-5f.

Typical mistake 2 of 2

Black to move. Many players reach for K-4h here — find the better move.

Why K-4h is a mistake

Static Rook castles on the left, away from its own rook. Walking the king to 4h puts it on the rook's side, right where the fight will start.

Better: K-6h.

FAQ

Where are the weak points of the Mino castle?

For White's Mino (king 8b, silver 7b, golds 6a and 5b), the head at 8c and the edge on the 9th file. Pawns aimed at the head are the classic way in.

Why does Black castle on the left?

Static Rook castles away from its own rook, which attacks on the right. Walking the king to 4h would put it right where the fight will start.
